Tarot Tuesday: Shadow Work Tarot

In Jungian psychology, “shadow” or “shadow aspect” refers to an aspect of your personality which the conscious ego does not identify in itself. In short, the shadow is the “dark side”. Because one tends to reject or remain ignorant of the least desirable aspects of one’s personality, the shadow is largely considered “bad” or the entirety of the unconscious…To know yourself, you must accept your dark side. To deal with others’ dark sides, you must also know your own. Seeing your shadow for what it is, embracing it as part of yourself, and integrating it into your life and magickal practice not only makes you a better person but also a more powerful witch.

Shadow Work TarotBetween last night’s lunar eclipse and the solar eclipse on Aug 21st my focus in my magickal practice will largely be returning to my shadow work. This is a powerful time for shadow integration not only because of the eclipses but also because of the Moon will be in Aquarius, opposing the Sun in Leo, which is still separating from a conjunction with Mars. This is a time, astrologically, for opposites warring. The eclipses only serve to deepen this with the conflict of dark and light. Acknowledging and working with this is a way of embodying both and harnessing this time of growth and transformation.

Why Tarot and Shadow Work?

Tarot helps spark memories, illuminate shadow aspects that they are not conscious of yet, or for advice about how to move on and heal from the tearing down that is inherent in the shadow work process. I intend to use the cards as a meditation technique mostly. I have been playing around with a spread idea to help me out. Once I have it fully formed, I will share it here.

The decks I am using for this work are the basics – Rider-Waite and Thoth. The first because I don’t want the “oo-shiny” or need to learn a new deck to distract me at this time. The second because the Thoth deck has a tendency to really kick my ass – it has a no-holds-barred vibe and every time I’ve used it, the readings have been blunt, harsh, and exactly what I’ve needed to hear. The reason I am not just using the Thoth deck is because the one I have access to is my husbands – I’m thinking I will need to buy my one in the days ahead, heh.

Kelly-Ann Maddox, tarot diva that I adore, has some fantastic shadow work journal prompts on her site and a few videos dealing with the topic, including an interview with kick-ass witch Joanna DeVoe

Want to Join me?

I just opened up a Simbi offering for anyone that would like to discuss Shadow Work further with me or wants advice on their own work. I don’t know yet if I will leave up this particular service past the solar eclipse, we will see. The offering is only 20 simbi or open for trade. Feel free to send me a message, I’m looking forward to sharing this journey with you.
